Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT operators carry their load through brackets, hinge plates, and mounting posts that were factory-specified for European conditions, not a Texas July. The welding and fabrication work we do applies across the BFT swing and slide line, including the Deimos, Phobos, and Botticelli swing operators, the Aries and Rigel slide units, and the older Sub and Icaro series still found on plenty of Dallas driveways. The compatibility gotcha is this: BFT swing operators use a specific hole pattern on their mounting plates, and if a previous installer drilled a custom pattern to fit a different motor, the new bracket has to match that hole layout, not the one printed in the BFT manual. We measure the existing footprint before we cut anything.

OEM BFT brackets work fine when the column is plumb and undamaged. But after years of Dallas clay soil shifting, a fabricated bracket with a thicker wall and a longer weld bead often outlasts the original spec. The decision comes down to what failed: if the steel is ripping at the original weld points, we recommend fabricating a reinforced plate. If the bracket is simply bent and the motor is still factory-aligned, an OEM replacement is the right call.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags at the hinge side by half an inch or more. The hinge post or the bracket welded to it has begun to fatigue. Over time the operator has to push harder to swing the same weight, which shortens motor life.
• A cracking or popping sound when the gate moves. That’s metal flexing against a failing weld. The noise usually starts before the visible crack appears, so it pays to have it looked at while the repair is small.
• The BFT operator bracket has pulled away from the column. On Dallas masonry columns, the anchor bolts loosen or the column face spalls, and the bracket starts working loose with every cycle. The weld itself is rarely the weak point here; the mounting surface is.
• The gate leaf scrapes the driveway or drags on the track. A bent or broken hinge mount shifts the leaf a few degrees and gravity does the rest. Left alone, the scrape wears the bottom rail and forces the operator to work against friction it was never sized for.
• Visible rust bleeding through the paint at a weld joint. Dallas humidity plus seasonal rain means a weld that was never sealed properly rusts from the inside out. By the time the rust shows, the structural integrity is already compromised.

There are things you can safely check: get low and look at where the brackets meet the column, take photos of any rust or cracking, and run the gate once to listen for the popping noise. But welding on a gate that’s under tension is not a weekend project. A gate leaf that weighs 400 pounds can shift when you cut into the bracket, and a bad weld on an operator mount can turn a BFT motor into a projectile if the plate fails mid-cycle.
