• Gate hums but doesn’t move. The capacitor that gives the motor its starting torque has failed. The motor is trying, but it can’t overcome the gate’s weight. Replace the capacitor early and you might buy the motor another two years; wait and the motor windings burn out, at which point you’re replacing the whole unit.
• Gate opens halfway and reverses. The limit switch inside the motor is drifting, so the control board thinks the gate hit an obstruction. On Linear units this is usually a worn limit cam, and the motor often gets blamed when it’s actually the switch assembly failing.
• Remote works intermittently, and not from the same distance it used to. The receiver logic on the motor’s board is degrading. On LSO/LGO units the receiver is integral to the motor control board, so replacing the motor often means the remote range problem goes away too.
• Motor runs constantly or makes a grinding sound. The gear train inside the unit is stripping. This is the point of no return – the motor is done, and continued use risks damaging the gate itself.
• Gate moves slower than it did six months ago. Motor brushes are worn, or the start capacitor is weak. This one’s easy to ignore, but by the time you notice it in Dallas summer heat, the motor is close to failure.
