Which BFT Models This Applies To

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Keypad lights up but the gate won’t move. The keypad is sending the code, but the relay on the control board isn’t closing. This is a board-level failure, not a keypad problem. Replacing the keypad won’t fix it.
• Remote works from ten feet but not from the street. This is almost always the radio receiver antenna or the receiver module itself. BFT receivers degrade gradually in Texas heat, and the range shrinks over a few months before it fails completely.
• Gate opens but won’t close, and the photo-eyes are clean. The access control board interprets a blocked photo-eye signal as an obstruction. If the eyes are aligned and the gate still reverses, the board’s logic circuit is misreading the input.
• The gate cycles on its own in the middle of the night. A failing receiver picks up stray RF signals from passing vehicles, garage doors, or even some Dallas-area radio towers. A new receiver with updated filtering stops the phantom openings.
• You hear a click when you press the keypad, but nothing happens. That click is a relay firing, but the motor isn’t getting power. The problem could be the relay contacts on the board, which wear out after tens of thousands of cycles.

Access control work on a BFT operator sits in a gray zone. The low-voltage side of the board runs 24 volts, which won’t hurt you, but the incoming line power to the board is 120 volts, and that will. Before you open the enclosure, kill the breaker and use a non-contact voltage tester on the incoming terminals. If you’re not comfortable doing that, stop there and call us.

What you can safely check: whether the keypad beeps, whether the remote’s battery is fresh, whether the photo-eye lenses are clean and aligned. What goes wrong when owners go further: they short a terminal, blow a fuse they can’t source locally, or wire a keypad backwards and damage the board.
