Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls builds its opener line in two main series: the AXP, AXS, and AXV residential single and dual gate operator kits, and the heavier DTP and TSS series for farm and commercial tube gates. The welding and fabrication issues we see fall into three categories: the gate frame itself (cracked welds at the hinge side, rusted-through stiles, broken picket joints), the post mounting hardware (the plate the Ghost Controls opener bolts to, sheared or warped), and the hinge set (worn pins, elongated holes, cracked leaf plates).

Here’s the compatibility gotcha worth knowing before you order anything: Ghost Controls uses a four-bolt mounting pattern on their opener bases, but the bolt spacing differs between the residential AXP/AXS series and the DTP series. A bracket fabricated for an AXP will not fit a DTP opener without re-drilling. We measure the bolt center distance on site before we cut or bend anything. If you have the original manual, the mounting template page (usually page 6 or 7) shows the exact layout. If you don’t, we bring a paper template and mark it against the motor base before any steel gets cut.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Ghost Controls does not sell a standalone weld-on bracket kit for most models. They sell complete opener packages and a limited set of replacement arms. That means most fabrication work is custom by necessity. We make brackets from 1/4-inch A36 steel plate, which is thicker than the factory 3/16-inch brackets on several AXP-series posts. The extra thickness adds roughly $20 in material per bracket and roughly doubles the fatigue life in a Texas climate where steel expands and contracts through a 60-degree daily swing.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags toward the free end by more than half an inch. This usually means the top hinge weld has cracked or the post plate is bowing. The opener keeps working, but the hinge side is slowly tearing.
• The opener arm’s bracket has visible movement or a gap between the plate and the beam. That gap means the bolts are loose or the plate has deformed. Every cycle with slop in the bracket wallows the holes bigger and eventually snaps the plate.
• A creak or pop on every open/close cycle that stays in one spot. That’s a crack flexing at a specific weld joint. Sound travels well through steel, so a pop near the hinge may be coming from a crack near the post.
• Fresh rust staining or flaking paint along a structural joint. Moisture got into the seam and corrosion is working the weld from the inside. In Dallas, the summer humidity plus winter rain accelerates this on unprimed welds.
• The Ghost Controls opener shows a fault code or starts/stops repeatedly. When the motor senses repeated current spikes due to the gate binding on a failing weld or hinge, the control board logs faults or shorts cycles to protect itself.

You can safely inspect a Ghost Controls gate for obvious damage: check whether the gate sags, whether the bracket plates show gaps, whether any welds have visible cracks or fresh rust. You can tighten loose hinge bolts and watch the gate cycle to see where it binds. What you should not do is attempt a structural weld yourself unless you weld for a living. A gate frame under spring tension or bearing the weight of a motor arm can shift when you grind away a cracked weld, and an inexperienced bead on a load-bearing joint is weaker than the original failure, not stronger.
